Bibliographies for Lollard Studies
These bibliographies are intended to embrace all fields relevant to Lollard studies, broadly defined. We seek to include texts relevant to the literary, historical, cultural, and religious milieu of Lollardy as well as those specifically by and about Lollard writers. Each of these two bibliographies stands on its own; abbreviated references to other works are made within each, but not between them. The Bibliography of Primary Sources was last updated on February 25th, 2006. It contains five sections:
- Bibliographies and Indices,
- Ecclesiastical and State Records,
- Religious and Devotional Texts,
- The Works of John Wyclif,
- The Works of Jan Hus, and Other Texts Related to Hussitism.
The primary bibliography contains only printed texts, not manuscripts.
The Bibliography of Secondary Sources was last updated on August 27th, 2006. It has two sections:
The Primary and Secondary bibliographies are each kept as single files each to permit word searches of the complete lists at once (use the "Find" command in your browser to search the page after it is fully loaded).
The Secondary Sources are no longer subdivided by discipline because it has proven impossible to find categories which do anything but confuse rather than clarify the content of the sources. As a help here, the brief summaries which are regularly included in the "Recent Publications" section of "Lollard Society Newsletter" will be appended to new entries as they are appear.
For more comprehensive help, a print version of this bibliography also exists as Derrick Pitard, "A Selected Bibliography for Lollard Studies." In Lollards and their Influence in Late Medieval England, ed. Fiona Someset, Jill C. Havens, and Derrick Pitard. Woodbridge: Boydell, 2003. 251-319. This includes a set of sixteen bibliographical introductions to topics in Lollard Studies. These will be helpful to find paths into the sources, especially the secondary literature.
